Chiropractic Care Naturally Treats Colic

Posted on 2012-02-06 10:25:44

(NaturalNews) Colic is defined as inconsolable crying in an infant for as least three hours a day, at least three days a week, for at least three weeks. A colicky baby typically presents with a loud piercing cry, flexed legs, tensed abdominal muscles, and clenched fingers. It typically starts around three weeks of age and lasts until around three months but sometimes lasts for as long as six months. Approximately 10-20% of babies are affected by colic. Doctors diagnose colic based on the previously mentioned "Rule of 3" and after ruling out diseases that may make a baby cry uncontrollably. Parents of infants with colic report significantly higher stress levels than parents whose babies don't have colic. The stress and frustration of trying to soothe a colicky baby may interfere with mother-baby bonding and can increase the risk of postpartum depression. In addition, colicky babies are more likely to be victims of child abuse and shaken baby syndrome. Despite the research done on colic there is no known cause, which can make treatment difficult. Chiropractic care has shown some of the best results, with 94% of colicky babies demonstrating improvement with chiropractic adjustments.

Research on chiropractic care and colic has shown significant benefits over other treatments such as dietary changes, medication, and infant positioning. A randomized clinical trial published in 1999 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that "Spinal manipulation is effective in relieving infantile colic". For this study the researchers randomly assigned infants diagnosed with colic into two groups. One group received chiropractic care for two weeks and the other group was given the anti-gas medication dimethicone for two weeks. The babies in the chiropractic group showed a 67% decrease in crying while the babies on medication showed a 38% decrease in crying.

Another study with 316 children also showed significant improvement in colic in response to chiropractic care. This prospective study used diaries from mothers of colicky babies to track the amount of crying. The three month long study showed a "satisfactory result of spinal manipulative therapy in 94% of the cases". The improvements occurred after an average of only three adjustments within two weeks.

Chiropractic care is a conservative, gentle, and very successful option for treating infants with colic. Chiropractic adjustments for infants are specific, gentle, and safe. The International Chiropractic Pediatrics Association has a database of chiropractors who work with babies and children. To locate a chiropractor visit www.icpa4kids.org/locator.

Chiropractic boosts brain-body coordination

Posted on 2012-02-03 07:23:56

(NaturalNews) The brain is the master control system for the entire body. It sends and receives a complicated frequency of signals with the body that dictate the function of the body. When there is interference in this neurological feedback loop, it alters the environment the brain perceives itself to be in; this consequently changes the adaptation process the brain orchestrates throughout the body. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to enhance the sensorimotor integration of the brain with the body.

Many experts have hypothesized that increased stress cycles in the body produce the environment for dis-ease and eventually disease within the body. Stress can come from a variety of sources in the mental/emotional form, chemical form, and physical realm. When the body is under increased stress it responds by increasing its sympathetic tone. This means the body shunts itself into "fight or flight" survival based mode by altering cardiovascular & endocrine function to get itself ready for dynamic activity.

Increased sympathetic tone causes a release of stress hormones such as adrenalin, epinephrine, and cortisol. This is the same response we get when we are anxious or exercising. This is okay if it is for a short period of time; however, when the stress lasts longer than expected it exhausts the body and causes a state of dis-ease to manifest.

When the brain sends information to the organs, muscles, and tissues of the body, this is called efferent neurological flow. In return, the afferent flow of information includes all the messages sent to the brain from skin, muscle, joint, and organ receptors. This afferent/efferent neurological loop is how the body is able to respond and adapt appropriately to its environment.

The ramifications of increased stress hormones in the body include overworked adrenal glands, lowered immunity, decreased digestive functions, fatigue, & blood pressure disturbances. Increased cortisol levels also cause ligament laxity by stripping critical proteins from the tendon and ligament structures. This causes joint weakness throughout the body, including the spine and extremities, making them much more susceptible to injury.

Subluxation is a term used to describe mechanical compression and irritation to spinal joints and nerves. Subluxation scrambles the neurological feedback loop by causing altered rhythms of neurological flow. Subluxations are caused by trauma, poor posture, or increased chemical and emotional stresses.

Subluxations are a physical stress on the body and therefore increase the sympathetic tone, so the body shunts its energy toward the fight or flight system. If the subluxation(s) are not corrected they continue to produce this increased stress response. This increases cortisol and causes greater joint & ligament laxity in the spine and extremities making them more susceptible to injury. Additionally, increased long-term stress on the body greatly accelerates the degenerative processes of the spine and joints leading to osteoarthritis.

Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to normalize spinal afferent/efferent processes to their proper resting tone. This is like hitting the reset button on the computer when it is malfunctioning. The computer is allowed to pause and reprocess itself. Chiropractic adjustments stop the stress response and restore normal hormonal and cardiovascular function to the body. This allows the body to reset itself and begin healing the damage that was done in the body due to chronic stress cycles.

Research performed by Taylor and Murphy demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments enhanced sensorimotor integration, the body's ability to sense where it is in space and effectively coordinate complex movement patterns. This improves function in both the brain and the body. Improved spatial intelligence translates into better physical and mental balance, coordination, and mobility. Chiropractic adjustments make you think and move with better speed, skill, and finesse.

9 Reasons To See A Chiropractor

Posted on 2012-02-02 06:18:19

#9: Chiropractic Alleviates Pain - Chiropractors address the underlying cause of pain disorders, headaches, low back pain and sports injuries by treating the cause, not covering the symptoms. Quite often, those painful conditions are linked to dysfunctional areas in the spine known as vertebral subluxations – where movement is restricted or spinal bones are misaligned. Chiropractors adjust vertebral subluxations and this often alleviates the pain. #8: Chiropractic Boosts Productivity – Since chiropractic care keeps you healthier, you will also find that your efficiency at work increases, also. For instance, chiropractic care rids LBP associated with sitting hour after hour in ergonomically incorrect chairs. “Sitting causes the pelvis to rotate backwards and causes a reduction in the lumbar lordosis, chunk-phi angle, and knee angle” notes researchers. Treatment also causes “an increase in muscle effort and disk pressure” (JMPT 1999; 22:594-609). In relating LBP can lead to work absence and higher medical costs: the focus of a study published earlier this year. In a review of 250 employees receiving workers compensation for low back pain– 72 of whom had no physically therapeutic care — patients receiving spinal adjustments experienced greater reductions in pain and disability. This translated into lower therapeutic costs and a faster return to work (Spine Journal 2006; 6:289-295). Chiropractic care effectively restores proper spinal alignment and reduces LBP. Missing appointments however, may foster a “one step forward, to step back” scenario. #7: Chiropractic Improves Cognitive Function – Mapping of brain activity before and after chiropractic adjustments of the spine and the neck reveals that chiropractic care stimulates cognitive function. In a study involving 500 adult volunteers, researchers used cutting edge technology to create maps of functioning in the cortical portions of the brain before and after chiropractic adjustments of the cervical spine. Researchers found that “cervical adjustments activate specific neurological pathways” in the brain, potentially stimulating cognitive function (JMPT1997;20:529). Chiropractic adjustments also enhance response mechanisms in the brain, according to researchers in New Zealand who conducted a study involving 30 volunteers: all with evidence of cervical spinal joint dysfunction. Instead of cortical mapping the researchers used reaction time to various stimulation as a gauge. “Multiple sites of cervical spinal joint dysfunction were related to impaired cortical processing,” noted the researchers. This was demonstrated by “significantly less accurate response selection and a trend toward more variable performance of an anticipated response.” (JMPT 2005;28:502-7). After chiropractic adjustments, the volunteers demonstrated improved cortical processing and response selection. #6: Chiropractic Boosts Immunity and Prevents Other Conditions – Scientific research reveals that regularly scheduled chiropractic care may boost the body’s immune response. And a powerful immune system is a key component of chiropractics all-natural approach. One study involved 11 patients over a nine-month period. The pilot study provided preliminary information regarding chiropractic care and possible links to improved immune status. Chiropractic care also boosted other aspects of health and quality of life – as mentioned above (JVSR 2006 1-6). Another study in 1991 even found that chiropractic adjustments boost levels of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and monocytes — white blood cells associated with a healthy immune system (JMPT 1991; 7:399-408). #5: Chiropractic Reduces Stress – Chiropractic care reduces stress by allowing the body to achieve a balance. In addition, chiropractic helps keep patients free of the impairments to regular exercise, which is key to reducing stress and preventing stress-related anxiety and depression. And, while chiropractors do not treat depression, preliminary research demonstrates that chiropractic adjustments may ease depressive symptoms by increasing endorphins. “It has been long speculated that chiropractic interventions may affect mental health problems,” note researchers. Investigators followed 15 adults who were both clinically depressed and had cervical spine subluxations. Before and after receiving an adjustment, the subjects completed a standard assessment for depression called the Beck Depression Inventory II. Results revealed a marked reduction in depression scores following treatment (JVSR 2005:1-4) #4: Chiropractic Care Encourages Increased Physical Activity – New patients frequently find that chiropractic care jump starts them toward a more wellness oriented lifestyle, simply because they can move more and with less pain. For instance, many chiropractic patients report improved function and with that, an increased ability to stick to a regular exercise program. #3: Chiropractic Reduces Dependency on Medications – Individuals who maintain regular chiropractic care are far less likely over use medication, which all have dangerous side effects. Even OTC pain medication may cause problems in the gastrointestinal system. In addition, long-term use of pain medication can actually worsen the very symptoms they was intended to reduce – a “rebound’ reaction. “Rebound” headaches are relatively new, and describe a long standing, “unnamed” and largely unrecognized condition caused by taking painkillers — daily or on a regular basis — from migraines or other headaches. Remember, these conditions are common, they are NOT normal! #2: Chiropractic Improves Sleep Quality – Chiropractic patients often enjoy improved quality of life, including sleep quality. This is due to a reduction in pain and anxiety which often interferes with sleep patterns. Improved sleep enhances immunity and your ability to fight disease. Some exciting preliminary research links insomnia with vertebral subluxations. The study collected data on 221 patients being cared for by 15 different chiropractors. According to the findings, “one third of the 154 patients who completed the semi structured interview reported their sleep pattern was changed immediately after their chiropractic adjustment. All but one of these 52 patients reported improvement” in the 20 patients with insomnia, improved sleep was noted in the six days following the chiropractic adjustment. ”However, no consistent trends were noted in the days and weeks following care, so additional research is necessary before a firm link may be established” (JMPT 2005;28:179). #1: Chiropractic Adds Life and Improves Structural Wellness - Regular chiropractic care instills patients with sense of ‘health-confidence” and self-confidence. Much can be said for first impressions. So whether it be in business or in our personal lives, your posture can speak for you before you ever utter a word. If you see someone standing upright, they carry an aire of confidence that bears watching and commands respect. Contrast that mental image with someone who is hunched over or slouches and you can see what I mean. Chiropractic patients learn to take charge of their own well-being, and in turn, increase their longevity by adding a heightened quality-of-life.

Why chiropractic? (Opinion)

Posted on 2012-01-30 07:41:57

(NaturalNews) A better way to health is to make sick people well, the natural way. Chiropractic emphasizes body engineering, postural stability, vertebrae adjustment and dynamic, self-regulating, control systems. It is spectacularly successful and decidedly economical.

Discontent over present day medical care has become so decided, that it has triggered a fast growing switch to chiropractic by millions upon millions of people worldwide. The powerful and paranoid American Medical Association has long struggled, unsuccessfully, to erase chiropractic altogether, even to the point in Hawaii of making it so that a physician must be the primary, with referral rights, in an automobile accident.

More and more Americans are learning that chiropractic, because of consistent and successful clinical results being achieved, are a welcome alternative to the drugs or surgery approach to "healing". With the development of newer knowledge about the nervous system, especially in cybernetics, the scientific implications of chiropractic has broadened immensely.

We are flabby, overweight, and have lots of dental caries, fluoridation notwithstanding. Our gastrointestinal system operates like a sputtering gas engine. We can't sleep and we can't get going when we are awake without coffee or some other stimulant. We have neuroses and high blood pressure.

Neither our hearts nor our heads last as long as they should. Coronary disease, at the peak of life, has hit epidemic proportions. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death (fourth between the ages of 15 and 44), and we suffer from a myriad of the diseases of civilization. Isn't it strange that all of this illness, sickness and disease exist in the U.S., where American Medical Science supposedly leads the world?

Today, American hospitals are crowed, sometimes beyond capacity and a seriously ill person frequently must wait even weeks for a bed. When you get sick in America, your chances of getting well quickly, without excessive loss of time, money or your life, is questionable. It's like playing Russian Roulette to be medically treated by many of the medical doctors - all members of the American Medical profession.

People no longer place unlimited faith in any one doctor or any one healing approach, especially medical. The drug approach is producing new diseases from harmful side effects of many of the drugs. Just look at the Thalidomide horror of the 50's and the Vioxx horror recently, for openers.

Harmful side effects from drugs are becoming routine and result from the injudicious use of drugs by medical doctors. Today, physicians prescribe thoughtlessly, indiscriminately and often needlessly, the use of radiation, chemotherapy, antibiotics, steroids, tranquilizers and blood transfusions. It's a small wonder that 20 to 25 percent of our population are patients in hospitals daily. If medical doctors continue to interfere with Mother Nature, the American Public must pay the penalty.

It's no secret that certain drugs, surgical procedures, and other forms of therapy can, even when properly employed, create unfavorable, often harassing, and many times, fatal side-effects. Unhappily, it is true that drugs are frequently administered or other procedures performed, apparently without due regard for their disquieting and sometimes dangerous potentialities.

Unfortunately, illnesses and deaths caused by drugs are not among the reportable diseases. The American Medical Community is under attack by all segments of our society for its failure to provide quality health care. American medicine stands on the brink of chaos. Even treating routine illnesses is inferior in quality, not to mention the utterly hopeless disinterest by medical doctors in disease prevention. The horrendous myth that drugs and surgery should treat all diseases known to mankind is asinine.

American Medical Science seems to be on another planet in a different galaxy scientificating for robots. It is clear that science certainly has not discovered how to maintain the human body in a happy condition on planet Earth.

So-called minor diseases, which are not being treated successfully, disable millions upon millions of our people and yet other natural types of therapy could help these victims of incompetency. The failure of orthodox medicine has created a need and climate for a change.

Many millions of Americans are turning to doctors using natural healing techniques and chiropractors are realizing a remarkable success story in their healing art. Take back pain for example - a medical doctor treats a person with back pain by placing him in traction in a hospital for weeks or longer. With a chiropractor, the ordeal takes a few days.

Chiropractors offer preventive maintenance. Not only does he treat the specific ailment, he recognizes the stresses and strains of our daily activity that are throwing our bodies out of balance. Prolonged over a period of time, this can cause functional displacement of the spine and other structures. Disturbing the function of important nerve pathways.

A chiropractor studies the human body the way an engineer looks at an intricate piece of machinery. In both cases, the object is not to add or subtract, if possible, but rather to adjust the machine in ways to provide for its most efficient operation. So, the chiropractic approach can often prevent sickness. Functional disturbances, caused by nerve irritations can be detected long before definite symptoms develop. Chiropractic is successful because it recognizes that disease exists in the patient, not in the test tube.

Sickness, illness and disease are the result of some departure from normal function of the body. Pain is caused by irritation and injury of the spinal nerves, which extend to all parts of the body. When a medical doctor treats pain, he resorts to the medical procedures of the chemical approach - injection of drugs, mainly morphine and its derivative. When a chiropractor produces relief from pain, the patient knows that the relief experienced is due to the removal of the cause, not by drugs.

So, the chiropractor, by his distinctive method of diagnosis and analysis, is able to trace the pain to the site of the involved spinal nerve roots. It is this analysis of the mechanical faults of the area, which reveal the cause of the nerve injury. By using manipulative techniques, he is able to correct the cause of the impairment and restore normal function to the spinal nerve roots and spinal nerves. When this is done, health is restored.

Correct diagnosis of disease by the medical community is extremely uncertain, usually very unreliable, and unsatisfactory. Why? Because most physicians treat symptoms, mistaking effects for causes. Most attacks of disease of any and all kinds get well, whether treated or not, if they have not passed from functional to organic. They come and are gone in a few days, without the aid of a physician. Natural comfort usually returns to normalcy when accumulated toxins in the blood fall below the body tolerance level. There was no cure!

Nerve energy returns to normal when the causes of the loss of vitality are discovered and removed. If your body rebels, stop your loss of vitality activities, stop eating, and rest and relax comfortably until nerve energy is restored to normal. Even consider a fasting for a while.

So-called "cures" by the medical community are a delusion. Learn what disease really is and give up the ingrained, ridiculous notions concerning cures. Remember, the word patient is a euphemism for the word customer, and the success of any business depends upon repeat customers.

Chiropractic Helps Digestive Disorders

Posted on 2012-01-26 06:25:09

NaturalNews) Over $80 billion are spent each year on drugs to relieve heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, gas, irritable bowel, constipation, diarrhea and other digestive disorders. These symptoms of abnormal digestive are becoming increasingly more prevalent in our society. Science and research have shown that chiropractic care offers a powerful solution to this modern-day epidemic.

The nervous system controls digestive function from several different regions. The vagus nerve which courses out of the brain stem and runs near the atlas bone innervates all the major organs of digestion and functions to stimulate the digestive process. Other major areas controlling the pace of digestion include the sympathetic nerves coming out of the thoracic & lumbar regions and the sacral parasympathetic nerve fibers. Spinal misalignment in any of these regions can lead to neurological compromise and altered digestive function.

Wellness oriented chiropractors search for the location of such spinal misalignments termed `subluxations.` A specific chiropractic adjustment realigns the altered regions and restores nerve supply to the deficient organs. This approach honors the body's innate ability to heal and works to harmonize this incredible life force in order to enhance organ function & quality of life.

Several studies have demonstrated the power of chiropractic adjustments restoring optimal function in individuals with digestive disturbances. In a published case study, a young woman had been afflicted with IBS symptoms once or twice a week for 5 years. After one adjustment she noticed an easing of symptoms and within a short time all her digestive problems disappeared. When the report was published 2 years later she was still symptom free.

A 2008 study demonstrated how effective chiropractic care is for infants with digestive disturbances. Researchers chose three infants who were experiencing infrequent bowel movements from once a week to once every 3 or 4 days. Parents of these infants had tried several different laxatives and other procedures recommended by their medical staff. They had also followed specific dietary changes and the use of cod liver oil and mineral oil without any results.

The infants began wellness oriented chiropractic for periods ranging from three weeks to three months. According to the study author Dr. Larry S.Arbeitman, D.C., ` All three experienced almost immediate improvement. By the end of the study all three had bowel movements at least once every day.`

Subluxations within specific areas of the spine can prevent the bowel from functioning properly. Throughout the years it has been common place to see instances of people of all ages who have not had a bowel movement for days experience almost immediate relief after an adjustment. Regular chiropractic care can help patients establish a more natural rhythm of comfortable, effortless elimination.
